Juice Fast – How Does it Work?

Exploring the Power of Juice Fasting

You’ve like heard of the juice fast by now. Many people use it to lose weight fast or to rid their bodies of harmful toxins to feel better. It can be a great way to accomplish both of these goals. So what exactly is Juice Fast - How Does it Work?

Just what is a juice fast? It’s a short period of time where you only drink juice. It’s a cleansing of sorts, giving your body only the nutrients it needs and nothing else.

How does it work and is it right for you? Keep reading to learn more.

What is Juicing?

When you juice, you consume the juice of whole fruits and vegetables. You get the nutrients from the fruits or vegetables, but not the fiber, as that’s contained in the pulp. When you use the juice straight from fresh fruits and vegetables, it provides your body with the necessary vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients.

How do you Prepare for a Juice Cleanse?

Preparing for a juice cleanse is just as important as the cleanse itself. You have to get your body ready for the withdrawal from certain products, such as:

  • Caffeine
  • Sugar
  • Dairy
  • Wheat
  • Meat

Start this process a few days before you start the cleanse. This way you can gradually wean your body off of them without dealing with intense headaches or cravings that make it hard to continue.

While you prepare for the cleanse, increase your consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, to give your body the vitamins, nutrients, and strength it needs to withstand the cleanse.

Starting the Juice Fast

There are many ways to do a juice fast, the most important, however, is to prepare the juices yourself. When you do the cleanse, you want to know what you’re putting in your body. When you prepare the juice, you are in complete control.

What is your goal during the cleanse? This helps you determine what fruits and vegetables to put in it. Play with your tastes and use this time to try new fruits and vegetables.

Also, consider using organic fruits and vegetables. If you’re doing the juice fast to help rid your body of toxins or improve your body’s immune system, the fewer chemicals and pesticides you consume, the greater your results. Whether you use organic fruits and vegetables or not, make sure you thoroughly wash all produce before juicing to avoid contamination.

The sky is the limit when creating your juices, but here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Green juice – Use as many green vegetables as you can. Think of vegetables, such as kale, spinach, cucumbers, broccoli, or celery. If you need some sweetness, add the juice of green apples.
  • Red juice – Red and orange fruits and vegetables make up this juice including beets, orange, and carrots. Add the juice of an apple for sweetness or kale for even more nutrients.
  • Orange juice – Combine the juice of carrots and oranges with the juice of pineapples or apples for a little sweetness.

Have fun playing around with different combinations to see what you like. Remember, this is your individualized juice fast.

How Long Should you Juice Fast?

Don’t juice fast for too long. Typically, three days is the most. You should pay attention to how you feel throughout, though. If you feel weak, dizzy, or have vomiting or diarrhea, stop the fast and consult with your doctor.

Three days is enough time to rid your body of toxins and fill it up with proper nutrients. During that time, make sure you drink plenty of water. If you find yourself incurably hungry during the fast, you can drink organic vegetable broth or eat a whole vegetable, like a carrot or piece of celery to ward off the pangs of hunger.

Post-Juice Fast

After the juice fast, it’s important to slowly get back to your normal diet. Remember, you just taxed your body considerably. Start with easy to digest fruits and vegetables. You can then slowly resume your normal diet, spreading out the ‘new’ foods you eat over a few days so as not to shock your body. Since you just cleansed your body, though, you may want to eliminate certain foods, such as refined sugar, excessive dairy, or high amounts of red meat.

Precautions During the Juice Fast

Everyone will react differently to a juice fast, however, there is one thing everyone should do – take it slow. Do the juice fast during a time that you can rest a lot or just take it easy. You are bound to have less energy and feel a little ‘off’ during the cleanse. Take care of yourself by:

  • Only do light exercises – Skip the runs, heavy aerobic activity or lifting. Stick to moderate walks and yoga during the cleanse, as they are both gentle on your body while still getting the blood moving.
  • Take time for relaxation – Deep breathing, yoga, and meditation are great during a cleanse. It gives your body and mind time to destress and unwind, both of which help your body rid itself of harmful toxins.
  • Sleep – You may find your body needs even more sleep during the juice fast, allow it. This is a time for your body to reset and what better way to do that than with sleep?

A Juicing Schedule

Each person will differ, but typically, you should drink a juice every 1 ½ to 2 hours. Vary up your options throughout the day so that you give your body the nutrients it needs. Always start your day with lukewarm or warm water and lemon. From there, alter your juices throughout the day, ending around 8 PM to give your body time to rest.

As with any diet, consult with your doctor to make sure you’re healthy enough to undergo a juice fast. If you are, it’s a great way to reset your body’s organs and rid it of harmful toxins. If you then avoid the foods that were causing your body harm, such as refined sugars, excess dairy and excess red meat, you give your body a better chance at optimal health and increased energy.
