The truth about sugar

 

The Truth about Sugar by Nosh Detox and Geeta Sidhu-Robb

Sugar is always measured in grams. Which in theory is lovely. However how on earth that is supposed to help you when faced with a cupcake, or a fizzy drink, I don’t know. So I decided to create a helpful system that you can use daily to check how much sugar there is anything. I use this without thinking now.

Easy peasy system

One tsp of granulated sugar = 4 grams of sugar.

So as an easy way to remember this: 16 grams of sugar = 4 teaspoons of sugar.

The general calorie intake of men and women as you know differs widely so here is a rough guide for       judging your sugar intake for yourself:

Frightening isn’t it? 

And there is worse news…

INTERESTING FACT 1: Alcohol

Brut champagnes = 15 grams of sugar per litre.

Dry Brut Nature = 3 grams. [They are ideal for the calorie conscious, with no more than 65 calories per small glass 125ml glass, compared to 90 calories for regular champagne.]

Break down your calories and compare them:

  • A small 125ml glass of champagne = half an avocado without the fiber and good fats
  • A small 125ml glass of dry white wine = 2 plain pancakes
  • A large 175ml glass of red wine = 1 slice of margarita pizza
  • A pint of Guinness = 1 finger slice portion of Parmesan cheese
  • A pub serving of gin & tonic = 1 bowl of vegetable soup

INTERESTING FACT 2: Cereals

Be mindful in choosing cereals for your family! Although many are billed as ‘healthy’ they can have such high levels of sugar. Especially the gluten free and organic ones.

For example, Bran and Fruit cereals will seem unexpectedly high as they contain dried fruits.

So if you are eating these, just make sure that you don’t add any more sugar or honey.

For example if you think you are making a healthier choice choosing Kellogg’s All Bran - it has the same amount of sugar as Kellogg’s Frosties!

 I love to choose when I want to eat well and eat 'badly' because lets face it a life without cake is not a life worth living!!
