Thyroid function test – What is tested:
Thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and tri-iodothyronine (T3) are produced, stored, and secreted by the thyroid gland. These hormones play a major role in multiple biological and metabolic processes. The hormones act by binding to thyroid receptors that are distributed in almost every organ. This process regulates production of various proteins that are involved in development, growth, and cellular metabolism.
Thyroid function tests (TFTs) are the most commonly used endocrine test. Underactive thyroid is commonly undiagnosed by doctors. This is mostly due to the fact that not all hormone markers are being tested to gain a complete picture of the state of thyroid health.
Underactive thyroid – symptoms:
Weight gain or increased difficulty losing weight.
Coarse, dry hair.
Dry, rough pale skin.
Cold intolerance (you can’t tolerate cold temperatures like those around you)
Muscle cramps and frequent muscle aches.
